Wolfsklamm gorge hike
Your hike into the Wolfsklamm gorge begins in Stans and leads uphill via paths and rocky ravines. After twenty minutes of gentle ascent, you reach the highlight of the gorge – a rushing waterfall where you can feel the power of the water up close. From there, the trail continues to an idyllic stream bed, perfect for a relaxing break. The hike continues to the St. Georgenberg rock monastery, Tyrol’s oldest pilgrimage site. Under the ancient chestnut trees, there is an inn where you can fortify yourself with Tyrolean delicacies.
For the return journey, you have two options: hike back through the Wolfsklamm gorge or take the Way of the Cross and transform your hike into a circular walk.
Refuge for rare plant and animal species
The Wolfsklamm gorge is home to rare plant and animal species. For example, you can marvel at the lady’s slipper orchid – Austria’s largest orchid – as well as the lilies of the valley, wild roses, and Turk’s cap lilies that line the path's edges. The stream and its banks are popular with brown trout and dippers.
Where does the name Wolfsklamm come from?
The name “Wolfsklamm” is believed to have originated during a period when wild animals, such as wolves, roamed the surrounding forests and were hunted by humans. It is thought that this gorge provided a sanctuary for some of Austria’s last wolves during that time.
After your day in the gorge, unwind at the Hotel Neue Post. Enjoy the outdoor rooftop pool or relax in the sauna, reflecting on the remarkable experiences of your hike.
