Carnival festivities in Zillertal
Let the fun begin!

Get ready for a burst of colour, creativity, costumes, and celebration – carnival season is almost here!

One of the year’s most vibrant and joyful times is just around the corner: carnival – or “Fasching” as we call it in Austria! But do you know what lies behind this centuries-old custom that so many people eagerly anticipate each year? In this article, we’ll explore its origins, highlights, and customs.

The origins of carnival
The origins of carnival can be traced back to pre-Christian spring festivals, where communities celebrated the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Over time, these traditions were absorbed into the Christian calendar in the days leading up to Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday. During this time, people indulge in feasting, celebrations, and dressing up before the 40-day period of fasting begins.

Typical customs and traditions
One of carnival’s most iconic aspects is the imaginative costumes and masks. They allow people to give free rein to their creativity and temporarily adopt new personas. Historically, masks were used to ward off evil spirits or dissolve social boundaries.
In many towns and villages, colourful parades are another major highlight. Floats, often themed with humour or social commentary, make their way through the streets, accompanied by music groups, dancers, and revellers in fancy dress. Famous celebrations include the Cologne Carnival in Germany, the Venice Carnival in Italy, and the Villach Carnival in Austria. Closer to home, the Zillertal region also offers an exciting carnival experience. For instance, a lively parade will take place in Zell am Ziller on Sunday, 2 March, at 1:00 p.m.
“Faschingskrapfen”, the traditional carnival doughnuts filled with jam, chocolate, or vanilla cream are inextricably linked with carnival. If you’ve never tried this delicious treat, that’s one more excellent reason to book a stay at Hotel Neue Post in Mayrhofen!
